I was wondering, do I need to buy a certain make and model of a usb gps receiver to work with tangogps?

Any serial, USB or Bluetooth GPS receiver should do. 99.9% of all GPS receivers do output the NMEA protocol. You need to install gpsd too and point it to the gps device (usually in /etc/default/gpsd). The gps device is /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1 if connected to a serial port, /dev/USB0 or /dev/USB1 when it is a USB stick and /dev/rfcomm0 when it is a bluetooth GPS.
